Formula

Add tax: Total = Price × (1 + rate)

Remove tax: Price = Total ÷ (1 + rate)

Tax = Price × rate

To remove 18% GST from a total, divide by 1.18 — not multiply by 0.82, which gives the wrong answer.

Examples

  • Rs 10,000 + 18% GST

    Price before tax Rs 10,000.00 + 18% tax Rs 1,800.00 = Rs 11,800.00

  • Rs 59,000 including 18% GST

    Price before tax Rs 50,000.00 + 18% tax Rs 9,000.00 = Rs 59,000.00

  • AED 1,000 + 5% UAE VAT

    Price before tax Rs 1,000.00 + 5% tax Rs 50.00 = Rs 1,050.00

Important information

  • Provinces charge their own sales tax on services (e.g. Punjab Revenue Authority, Sindh Revenue Board) at rates that differ from the federal rate on goods.
  • Gulf VAT rates: UAE 5%, Saudi Arabia 15%.
