Formula

Profit = Selling price − Cost price

Margin % = Profit ÷ Selling price × 100

Markup % = Profit ÷ Cost price × 100

Margin and markup use the same profit but divide by different numbers, so markup is always higher than margin when you make a profit.

Examples

  • Buy at Rs 800, sell at Rs 1,000

Profit of Rs 200.00 (20% margin)

  • 50 items: cost Rs 1,200, price Rs 1,500

Profit of Rs 15,000.00 (20% margin)

  • Selling below cost

Loss of Rs 200.00 (11.11% margin)

Important information

  • Include delivery, packaging and platform fees in the cost price for a true profit figure.
  • Online marketplaces in Pakistan typically charge a commission on the selling price — subtract it before comparing margins.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. Buying at 800 and selling at 1,000 is a 20% margin but a 25% markup.

How do I set a price for a target margin?

Selling price = Cost ÷ (1 − margin). For a 30% margin on a Rs 700 item: 700 ÷ 0.7 = Rs 1,000.

How do I calculate loss percentage?

Loss % = (Cost − Selling price) ÷ Cost × 100. The calculator shows a negative margin and markup when you sell at a loss.

Should GST be included?

Usually no. If you are registered for sales tax, calculate profit on prices excluding GST.
