Formula

Total return % = (Final − Initial) ÷ Initial × 100

CAGR = (Final ÷ Initial)^(1 ÷ Years) − 1

CAGR (compound annual growth rate) is the steady yearly rate that would turn the initial amount into the final amount. It lets you compare investments held for different periods.

Examples

  • Rs 5 lakh → Rs 7.5 lakh in 3 years

    Total return 50% · Annualised (CAGR) 14.47%

  • Rs 10 lakh → Rs 25 lakh in 7 years

    Total return 150% · Annualised (CAGR) 13.99%

  • Rs 2 lakh → Rs 1.6 lakh in 2 years

    Total return -20% · Annualised (CAGR) -10.56%

Important information

  • Include dividends or rent received in the final value for a total return.
  • Compare your CAGR with inflation to see your real return.

Frequently asked questions

What is CAGR?

Compound annual growth rate — the average yearly growth rate assuming profits are reinvested.

Why is CAGR lower than total return divided by years?

Because of compounding: 50% over 3 years is about 14.5% a year, not 16.7%.

Can I use this for property or gold?

Yes — any asset with a buy value, current value and holding period.

What about money added during the period?
