Data Storage Converter — KB, MB, GB, TB

Convert file sizes, storage and data allowances. Both decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB, used by manufacturers and mobile packages) and binary units (1 GiB = 1,024 MiB, used by Windows) are included.

Formula

1 KB = 1,000 bytes · 1 MB = 1,000 KB · 1 GB = 1,000 MB

1 KiB = 1,024 bytes · 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB · 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB

1 byte = 8 bits

Internet speeds are quoted in bits (Mbps); file sizes in bytes (MB). Divide Mbps by 8 for MB per second.

Examples

  • 1 GB to MB

    1 Gigabyte = 1,000 Megabyte

  • 1 TB drive in GiB

    1 Terabyte = 931.322575 Gibibyte

  • 50 Mbps in MB/s (as bits → bytes)

    50,000,000 Bit = 6.25 Megabyte

Important information

  • A '1 TB' hard drive holds 10¹² bytes, which Windows displays as about 931 GB because it actually counts in GiB.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?

Officially 1,000 MB. 1,024 is the binary gibibyte (GiB), which some software still labels 'GB'.

How long to download 1 GB at 10 Mbps?

1 GB = 8,000 megabits, so about 800 seconds — around 13 minutes.

What is the difference between Mb and MB?

Mb is megabits; MB is megabytes. 1 MB = 8 Mb.
