  • The answer is shown in its simplest form.

Formula

a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd

a/b × c/d = ac / bd

a/b ÷ c/d = ad / bc

The result is reduced by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common factor. Improper fractions are also shown as mixed numbers.

Examples

  • 3/4 + 2/5

    3/4 + 2/5 = 23/20

  • 5/6 − 1/4

    5/6 − 1/4 = 7/12

  • 2/3 ÷ 4/9

    2/3 ÷ 4/9 = 3/2

Important information

  • To enter a whole number, use 1 as the denominator (e.g. 3 = 3/1). For a mixed number like 2½, convert it first: 2 × 2 + 1 = 5, so 5/2.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

How do I divide fractions?

Flip the second fraction and multiply: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c.

How do I convert a fraction to a decimal?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The result also shows the decimal and percentage.

Can I enter negative fractions?

Yes — put the minus sign on the numerator, e.g. −3/4.
