Formula

Mean = Sum of values ÷ Number of values

Median = middle value when sorted

Mode = most frequent value

With an even count, the median is the average of the two middle values. A list can have more than one mode, or none if every value appears once.

Examples

  • Marks: 72, 85, 90, 66, 85, 78

    Average (mean) of 6 numbers = 79.3333333333

  • Monthly bills: 5400 6100 7300 9800

    Average (mean) of 4 numbers = 7,150

Important information

  • The mean is pulled up or down by extreme values; the median is not. For salaries or property prices, the median often gives a fairer 'typical' figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean and average?

In everyday use they're the same thing: add up the values and divide by how many there are.

How do I find the median?

Sort the numbers. The median is the middle one, or the average of the two middle ones if there's an even count.

Can there be no mode?

Yes — if every value appears exactly once, the list has no mode.

How many numbers can I enter?

Up to 10,000, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
