  • Returns and inflation are assumptions, not guarantees. The 4% rule is a rough guide for how much a pot can pay out each year.

About this calculator

In Pakistan, Voluntary Pension Schemes (VPS) also give a tax credit on contributions — a good place to start if you have no employer pension.

Formula

Future value = Savings × (1 + r)ⁿ + Monthly × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r

Today's value = Future value ÷ (1 + inflation)^years

r is the monthly return and n the number of months until retirement. The 4% rule estimates a sustainable yearly withdrawal from the pot.

Examples

  • Age 30, Rs 25,000/month, 12% return

At 60 you could have Rs 105,348,924 (Rs 10,469,295 in today's money)

  • Age 40, Rs 50,000/month, 10% return

At 60 you could have Rs 52,624,589 (Rs 11,290,511 in today's money)

Important information

  • Inflation matters enormously over decades: at 8% a year, prices roughly double every 9 years.
  • Increasing your monthly saving each year with your salary makes a big difference — try a higher monthly amount to see the effect.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to retire?

A common rule of thumb is 25 times your expected yearly spending (the inverse of the 4% rule).

What return should I assume?

Use a realistic long-term figure for your mix of investments. Bank deposits earn less than equity funds but are steadier.

What is the 4% rule?

Withdrawing about 4% of your pot in the first year, then adjusting for inflation, has historically lasted around 30 years.

Does this include EOBI or a company pension?

No. Add those separately to the monthly income estimate.
