  • Estimate only. Actual results depend on variety, soil, water, weather and management.
  • Field counts vary a lot across a field — sample at least 5 spots and use the averages.

Results are estimates for planning. Actual figures depend on local conditions, prices and quotes — verify before making decisions.

About this calculator

Count a few plants or a small area in several places, enter the averages, and the calculator scales it up to maunds per acre.

Formula

kg/acre = Plants × Capsules per plant × Seeds per capsule × 1000-seed weight ÷ 1,000,000 × (1 − losses)

Sesame seeds are tiny — 1000-seed weight is usually 2.5–3.5 g.

Examples

  • Default field counts, 1 acre

Estimated sesame (til) yield: 7.3 maund per acre (292 kg/acre)

How to take field counts

  • Walk the field in a W or zig-zag pattern and stop at 5–10 spots.
  • Avoid field edges, water-logged patches and unusually good or bad spots.
  • Average your counts before entering them.

Important information

  • Harvest before capsules dry fully to reduce shattering, and include a realistic loss allowance.
  • All outputs are estimates for planning. Real results depend on variety, sowing date, soil, water, weather, pests and management.

Frequently asked questions

How much sesame yield per acre?

Roughly 4–8 maund per acre is common in Pakistan.

Why is my sesame yield lower than the estimate?

Shattering (seed falling out of dry capsules) can cause big losses. Increase the loss percentage if harvest is delayed.

How accurate is a pre-harvest yield estimate?

With careful sampling it is usually within 10–20% of the final yield. Accuracy improves with more sampling spots.
