Wheat Yield Calculator — Estimate Maunds per Acre

Estimate your wheat yield a few weeks before harvest using three numbers: spikes per square metre, grains per spike and 1000-grain weight.

  • Estimate only. Actual results depend on variety, soil, water, weather and management.
  • Field counts vary a lot across a field — sample at least 5 spots and use the averages.

Results are estimates for planning. Actual figures depend on local conditions, prices and quotes — verify before making decisions.

About this calculator

Count a few plants or a small area in several places, enter the averages, and the calculator scales it up to maunds per acre.

Formula

Grain (g/m²) = Spikes per m² × Grains per spike × 1000-grain weight ÷ 1000

kg/acre = g/m² × 4,046.86 ÷ 1000 × (1 − losses)

One acre is 4,046.86 m², so grams per square metre scale directly to an acre. A loss allowance covers harvesting and threshing losses.

Examples

  • Default field counts, 1 acre

Estimated wheat yield: 39.4 maund per acre (1,578 kg/acre)

How to take field counts

  • Walk the field in a W or zig-zag pattern and stop at 5–10 spots.
  • Avoid field edges, water-logged patches and unusually good or bad spots.
  • Average your counts before entering them.

Important information

  • Use a 1 m × 1 m frame (or 4 rows × 1 m adjusted for row spacing) to count spikes.
  • Count grains on 10–20 random spikes. 1000-grain weight is often 35–45 g for wheat in Pakistan.
  • All outputs are estimates for planning. Real results depend on variety, sowing date, soil, water, weather, pests and management.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good wheat yield per acre?

40–50 maund per acre is good for irrigated wheat; top farmers exceed 60. National averages are closer to 30.

What is 1000-grain weight?

The weight in grams of 1,000 grains. Heavier grains mean better filling and higher yield.

How accurate is a pre-harvest yield estimate?

With careful sampling it is usually within 10–20% of the final yield. Accuracy improves with more sampling spots.
